Urinary Tract Infection Men

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Urinary tract infection in men is usually caused by bacterial attack of the urinary tract. A simple bacterial attack may lead to a potentially harmful and fatal rapid growth of bacteria within the lining of the urethra. Not only does this bacterium affect the lining of the urethra, but it also infects other areas like; the prostrate gland, bladder and the kidneys. If untreated this disease may cause severe damage to organs and may lead to the death of the individual. It is recommended that one should immediately visit the doctor at the first sight of the infection symptoms. The symptoms may include swelling up of the urethra and sufferers may feel a strong pain when passing out urine.

In men this disease rarely appears during childhood but is predominantly common at the ages of fifty years and above. Men who have much more years than fifty years may have the infection but will rarely show any common symptoms. It is only after the death of the individuals that people may know that they had a urinary tract infection. But necessary measures can be taken in order to avoid such situations. You are advised to visit the doctor at least twice a month for regular health checkups. UTI’s are quite common in cases were certain men would have enlarged prostate glands. Enlarged prostate gland inhibits urine from passing out of the bladder effectively. The remaining urine in the bladder may lead to a bacterial attack. The drainage of the bladder through the use of a catheter may also lead to the infection of the urinary tract by harmful bacteria. The major causes of this disease in the cases of young men are the presence of kidney stones.

Epidemiological data and statistics show that urinary tract infection cases are much more in women compared to those of men. This could be because of the length of the urethra in men. Since the urethra in men is long it takes time for the bacteria to spread all the way to the bladder. There quite a number of bacterial infections in the urinary tract, these include; prostatitis, urethritis, cystitis and pyelonephritis. All these are the infections of the prostate gland, urethra, bladder and the kidney respectively.

The urinary infection tract symptoms in men include; a discomforting pain and a burning sensation when urinating. The infected person may feel the persistent urge to urinate especially during sleep hours. The person may discharge a fluid with pus from his penis and this symptom may be mistaken for a sexually transmitted disease.
