Urinary tract infections are the result of bacteria entering the urinary system particularly in the bladder and kidney thus causing the urine to have a high concentration of bacteria. Urinary tract infections can be harmful to humans so it is very important that when you suspect you have a urinary tract infection you consult a doctor. Your doctor will prescribe for you some medication to treat urinary tract infections. There is a wide variety of medicines that can be used to treat urinary tract infections some of which can be bought without a doctor’s prescription.

Medicines that can be used to treat urinary tract infections include some antibiotics that can be administered orally. Antibiotics such as trimethoprim, fluoroquinolone and nitrofurantoin are the most commonly used oral antibiotics in the treatment for urinary tract infections. These antibiotics are usually prescribed to persons and are to be taken as a 7 day course, which will require the person to take the antibiotics between 2 – 3 times a day. In the case of these antibiotics it is reported that taking them just before you go to sleep increases their efficacy.

Then there are the sulfur containing drugs such as sulfonamides which have an antibacterial effect. Some people are allergic to sulfur containing drugs so doctors have to take extra care when prescribing such drugs to patients. A medication that includes the combination of antibiotics such as trimethoprim and a sulfur containing drug sulfamethoxazole can be very effective at treating certain cases of urinary tract infections.

Then there are more severe cases of urinary tract infections which will require some intravenous injections of antibiotics such as aminoglycosides that is combined with beta-lactam. Patients suffering from urinary tract infections will have to go for the injections for a period of two days and then after that they can use oral antibiotics for the next five days. If the person does not respond to some of the antibiotic treatments then they may need some further examinations which will include ultrasound scans and X-rays.

Then there are some medications that have been used to treat some cases of urinary tract infections but are still debatable. These include cranberry juice and D-manose supplements which have all been used in the treatment and prevention of urinary tract infections. This is so for cranberries have been known to contain tannins that are effective at preventing the adhesion of E coli to the walls of the bladder. So what ever you do consult your doctor and get the best medicine that will relieve you off urinary tract infections.
